I was born in the Black Country at Brierley Hill in 1928. My family moved shortly afterwards to the outskirts of Birmingham. I found early enjoyment depicting the Roman Legions invading Britain on the classroom walls of my Primary school near Birmingham.
I studied drawing and painting at Birmingham College of Art for five years, interrupted only by working with aircraft engines during National Service in the Royal Air Force.
Following Teacher Training, study of the practice of painting at the Royal Academy Schools continued for three years alongside selling drawings and doing illustrations for House & Garden magazine. I also worked as a petrol pump attendant which kept things going.
However, teaching Art for the next 29 years has been my main activity, ending my teaching career at Haverfordwest Boys' Grammar and Tasker Milward Schools in Pembrokeshire. I had experience of giving Art Therapy in two psychiatric hospitals and a prison to add to my experience during this time.
Since retiring from teaching in 1984 I work as a photographer/archivist for Coracle Community Arts, a group set up mainly to provide stimulus for the mentally and physically handicapped and also involving the community.
During the 90's, I worked in 3D, mainly the human figure and I have produced a number of works about 15" high. This is the culmination of work in plaster and clay done in the 60's and 70's.
Living in West Wales by the Afon Taf is an excellent place to be part of nature and to allow the transparency of watercolour to show a feeling for light, whether working from the motif or in the studio. Local landscape and seascapes, sometimes including people and animals as intrinsic to the scene are my main subjects.
